Visas for Australian permanent residents seeking to return to Australia or maintain their travel facility.
If you’re an Australian permanent resident, your ability to travel in and out of Australia doesn’t last indefinitely.
At some point, your travel facility may expire — and if it does, you’ll need a Resident Return Visa (RRV) to re-enter Australia as a permanent resident.
We regularly help clients who have spent time outside Australia and are looking to return, as well as those who simply want to understand where they stand before travelling.
The Subclass 155 is the main RRV pathway.
If you’ve spent at least 2 years in Australia in the last 5 years, you’ll generally meet the residence requirement and may be granted a travel facility of up to 5 years.
If you haven’t met that requirement, you may still be eligible — but the focus shifts to demonstrating your ongoing ties to Australia.
This is where things become more case-specific, and how your circumstances are put forward can make a real difference.
In some cases, where the residence requirement isn’t met and ties are more limited, a shorter travel facility (such as 3 months under the Subclass 157) may be granted.
Some RRV applications are straightforward. Others need a bit more care — particularly where there has been a longer period outside Australia.
Taking the time to review your position properly before applying can make a difference.
